The Road to Machu Picchu...and Beyond

The Mantle | September 2010

What should have been a routine vacation to the fabled site of Machu Picchu turned out to be a real eye-opener for Stephanie Lim. Heavy rains forced helicopter evacuations of tourists from the nearby of Aguas Calientes, thereby scuttling the local economy and leaving local residents with no economic back-up plan. Stephanie presents a case for sustainable tourism in developing countries.

Global Shopping Haunts: Destination Buenos Aires

Catalog Magazine | August 2010

Buenos Aires is a city that takes its time. With a laid-back café culture, late-night dining habits, and a strange aptitude for queuing, the porteños—as the locals are called—are not ones to hurry. But with a sublime blend of French elegance, Italian food, Spanish romance, and a passion that is distinctly Argentine, life in this capital city demands relishing each distinct flavor. And that takes time.

Highs and Lows on the Bolivian Altiplano

October 27, 2009 | Examiner | Chicago

The first night in Bolivia I didn’t sleep. That day, we had gradually ascended more than 1500 meters from sweltering San Pedro de Atacama to cross the Chilean border into Bolivia, and although the sun was high in the sky, the air was thinner, the temperature cooler.

Open Source : Does LimeWire Hold the Key to Better Streets?

URBAN Magazine | Spring 2008

Mark Gorton is not a planner. Yet Gorton, who may be best known for creating the LimeWire file-sharing program, is making a surprising impact in the planning world. In the past decade, he and his growing team of software developers, journalists, and videographers have advanced the livable streets movement, engaged the community in the public process, and set the stage for a coordinated, regional approach to federal transportation policy. Gorton’s inspired leap from hacking the digital landscape to shaping our physical landscape can largely be found in the open source software world—and the power of the many: in the same way that many developers working on a public code will produce a better piece of software, many people working on the public streets will produce a better city. This private-sector efficiency and innovation, coupled with strong democratic idealism and civic-mindedness, make Gorton an incredibly effective champion of the public interest. MORE

Hello Moto!

URBAN Magazine | Fall 2007

I left my heart in San Francisco. I never thought I could love someone like Betsy. She was dangerous. She was fast. She was irritable, loud, and a little high-maintenance. But she was also 25 years old and beautiful, so I could forgive her these things. Most importantly, we traveled together well – so well that after a while, I couldn’t imagine going anywhere without her. Going places with Betsy was infinitely more fun than going alone. MORE
